Former Sixth Man of the Year drawing trade interest around the NBA

Malcolm Brogdon won the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Award. Shortly after, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in a deal that sent Jrue Holiday to the Boston Celtics.

Brogdon has played well for the rebuilding Western Conference franchise when he's been healthy and available for selection. He's averaged 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 39 games. He shot 44 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from three-point range.

According to a report by HoopsHype's Michael Scotto, multiple teams would be willing to trade for the veteran ball-handler should the Trail Blazers make him available heading into draft night.

“Malcolm Brogdon, one of Portland’s best 3-point shooters at 41.2 percent in 39 games last season, is a player rival executives are monitoring heading into the draft as a possible trade candidate," Scotto reported. "Brogdon is entering the final year of his contract at $22.5 million for the upcoming season."

Brogdon's talent is unquestionable. His problem is his inability to stay healthy for long stretches of the season. The veteran ball-handler has played under 60 regular-season games in five of the eight years he's been in the NBA. He's only cracked 70 games once, and that was his rookie season.

With such a concerning injury history, Brogdon's value around the NBA will likely be quite low. Teams won't want to give up too many assets for a player who could potentially miss a quarter of the regular season.

Nevertheless, Brogdon will be entering the final year of his contract, where he will earn $22.5 million. Some teams could view him as a potential trade chip later in the season. Others may see his arrival as a way to shed significant salary next summer.

The Trail Blazers may choose to move on from their veteran guard if the right offer crosses their table. As a rebuilding team, they need to give as many minutes as possible to their young stars.

Brogdon's presence may provide leadership, but it also acts as a roadblock to developmental minutes. A potential move could also help Brogdon potentially contend for a playoff spot or a championship next season.

As such, if the opportunity arises, both Portland and Brogdon would likely be interested in exploring things further.
